Hackney House

Set on a picturesque historic square in Hackney, this Grade II-listed home retained its original proportions and detailing, but the lower ground floor was opened to the light and the large garden was redesigned to connect with the interior.

We removed a poorly insulated lean-to and introduced a new extension that serves as a transitional space between the historic house and garden. Separated from the rear façade by a glazed link, the light, simple timber structure offers shelter while providing uninterrupted views of the garden from all areas of the lower ground floor.

The interior is defined by a simple palette of lime plaster, concrete flooring and Douglas fir, layered with natural fabrics to create a calming atmosphere that feels both cosy and connected to the garden and the square beyond.
